General
What is Capturly?
Capturly is a podcast recording app that records high-quality audio and video locally — on your own machine — so your results don’t depend on your internet connection. It runs on macOS, Windows, in the browser, and on mobile.
How is Capturly different from Zoom/Teams/etc?
| Feature | Video conferencing apps | Capturly |
|---|---|---|
| Recording quality | Compressed, internet-dependent | Local, full quality |
| Audio quality | Variable (32-128 kbps) | 48-96 kHz WAV |
| Video quality | Variable | Up to 4K |
| Internet required | Yes, always | No (solo), yes (with guests) |
| Each person records | No, only the host | Yes, everyone |
| Collecting tracks | Manual | Uploads to the host automatically |
What platforms are supported?
- macOS: 12 (Monterey) and later, Intel and Apple Silicon
- Windows: 10 (1903+) and 11, 64-bit
- Browser: Chrome, Edge, and Safari 16.4+ (Firefox is not supported)
- Android: 8.0 and later, on Google Play
- iOS / iPadOS: 16.4 and later, in App Store review
Is there a mobile app?
The Android app is live on Google Play. The iOS app is in App Store review. Both record solo, host sessions, and join sessions others host. See Mobile.
Running a Studio as its host stays on desktop and web — but hosting a standard session works from a phone.
Is there a web version?
Yes. You can record right in your browser — no download — on Chrome, Edge, and Safari 16.4+. Video goes up to 4K on paid plans, exactly as on desktop; audio is capped at 48 kHz, so the 96 kHz / 24-bit WAV master is desktop-only. See Recording in your browser.
Does Capturly support Linux?
Not yet. macOS, Windows, the browser, and mobile are the current surfaces — a Linux user can record in Chrome or Edge today.
Recording
What audio quality does Capturly record?
| Plan | Sample Rate | Bit Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 48 kHz | 16-bit |
| Pro / Team / Lifetime | 96 kHz | 24-bit |
Uncompressed WAV, on desktop. Browser recordings run at 48 kHz inside the MP4, and iPhone/iPad built-in microphones are capped at 48 kHz by the hardware on every plan.
What video quality does Capturly record?
| Plan | Maximum resolution |
|---|---|
| Starter | 1080p (with a watermark) |
| Pro / Team / Lifetime | 4K (2160p) |
Selectable rungs are 4K, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p — the same on desktop and in the browser. H.264 in an MP4, at 30 fps by default and 60 fps where your camera offers it.
What files are created for each recording?
A desktop session creates two files:
*_audio.wav— the audio master*_video.mp4— H.264 video with synced AAC audio
Recording in the browser creates the MP4 only. See File Formats.
Does the video file have audio?
Yes. *_video.mp4 contains synced AAC audio, so it plays anywhere and works as a self-contained backup. The separate WAV exists because it’s higher fidelity — use it when audio quality matters.
Can I record audio only (no video)?
Yes. Select “No Camera” in the camera dropdown to record audio only.
How much storage space do I need?
Approximately, per hour:
- Audio only, 48 kHz: ~345 MB
- Audio only, 96 kHz: ~1 GB
- 1080p video: ~3.6 GB
- 4K video: ~18 GB
Recording video on desktop writes both files, so add the audio figure.
What is the sync beep?
A 1000 Hz tone lasting half a second, mixed into the head of your audio. It shows up as an obvious spike in any waveform view, which makes aligning several tracks straightforward. Desktop and mobile recordings carry it; browser recordings don’t. See Sync Beep.
Can I disable the sync beep?
Not currently. It’s what makes multi-participant alignment reliable.
Can I pause a recording?
No. Stop the take and start a new one, or keep rolling and cut the gap in post.
What happens if a device unplugs mid-recording?
You get a warning telling you the take may have lost audio or video from that point. There’s no automatic pause or device switch — stop, check the file, and start a new take. See Device Management.
Sessions with guests
How many participants can join?
| Plan | Max participants |
|---|---|
| Starter | 1 (solo only) |
| Pro | 4 (you + 3 guests) |
| Team | 8 (you + 7 guests) |
| Lifetime | 1 (solo only) |
Do guests need a plan?
No. The host needs Pro or Team. Guests need nothing.
Do guests need to create an account or install anything?
No. Guests open the invite link in their browser and join. No account, no download.
On mobile, guests need the full invite link — the bare 6-character room code isn’t enough there. Desktop and web accept either.
How do I collect everyone’s recordings?
You don’t. When the session ends, each participant’s track uploads automatically and appears in your cloud library, attributed to whoever recorded it.
If an upload didn’t finish, it shows up in the library’s Unfinished uploads panel, where you can recover, save, or discard it.
What happens if someone loses connection?
Local recording continues on every device. A guest has 2 minutes to reconnect; if the host drops, the room holds for 30 seconds. A guest who rejoins mid-take has their recorder restarted automatically.
Is the call quality affected by internet speed?
The call — what you see and hear in real time — depends on your connection. The recording doesn’t, because each person records their own local feed.
Licensing
What plans are available?
| Plan | Price | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | Solo recording, 1080p, 48 kHz, watermarked |
| Pro | $15/mo or $149/yr | 4-participant sessions, 96 kHz, 4K, cloud backup |
| Team | $19/seat/mo or $179/seat/yr | 8-participant sessions, Studio, campaigns, shared library. 2-seat minimum |
| Lifetime | $199 one-time | Solo only, 96 kHz, 4K, cloud backup, no recurring fees |
See Licensing for the full comparison.
Is there a free trial of Pro features?
Yes — 14 days, no card required, one per customer. It’s available when you subscribe on capturly.app . Subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play don’t include a trial and start billing immediately.
Is there a watermark on the free plan?
Yes. Starter-plan video carries a small Capturly logo in the bottom-right corner. Any paid plan removes it.
In a session, the host’s plan decides — a Starter guest recording into a Pro host’s session produces an unwatermarked track.
How many devices can I use?
| Plan | Device limit |
|---|---|
| Starter | Unlimited |
| Pro | 5 |
| Team | 5 per member |
| Lifetime | 3 |
How do I activate my plan?
Sign in to your Capturly account in the app. Your plan follows your account across desktop, web, and mobile — there’s no key to enter.
Can I transfer my license to another device?
Yes. Remove a device from Account > Licenses on the web, then sign in on the new one.
What’s the refund policy?
See the terms of service at capturly.app/terms .
Technical
Why does Capturly need camera/microphone permissions?
To record audio and video. Without them, recording can’t function.
Does Capturly work offline?
Solo on desktop and mobile: yes, completely offline. Sessions with guests: no, they need internet for the peer connections. Browser: the page has to load, but capture itself is local.
What happens if my computer crashes during recording?
Bytes written before the crash are usually salvageable. On a paid plan, a copy was also streaming to your cloud library as you recorded, and the interrupted take surfaces in the Unfinished uploads panel for recovery.
Is my data sent to your servers?
Live call audio and video: no. Streams go directly between participants over peer-to-peer connections; only signaling data passes through our servers.
Your recordings: on Starter, never — recording is local only. On paid plans, a copy of your own recording streams to your cloud library, kept for 30 days, unless you turn that off.
Account and license data: yes, validated against our servers.
Can I use Capturly with virtual audio/video devices?
Yes. Virtual devices like OBS Virtual Camera and virtual audio cables work.
Editing & Post-Production
What software can I use to edit Capturly recordings?
Any audio or video editor, including Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Audacity, Reaper, and Descript.
How do I sync multiple recordings?
- Import all tracks into your editor
- Find the sync beep in each
- Align the leading edges
- Trim the head from all tracks together
For browser recordings, which have no beep, use a clap or countdown instead. See the Post-Production Guide.
What’s the best export format for podcasts?
- Audio: MP3 at 128-192 kbps, mono or stereo
- Loudness: target -16 LUFS
- Video: H.264 MP4; 1080p is standard for YouTube
