Solo Recording Guide

This guide covers the complete workflow for recording by yourself, from preparation through file management.

Overview

Solo recording is perfect for:

  • Solo podcast episodes
  • Monologue content
  • Voice-overs and narration
  • Video introductions
  • Practice sessions

Solo mode works completely offline - no internet required.

Before You Record

Environment Setup

Room:

  • Choose a quiet space with minimal echo
  • Soft furnishings (carpet, curtains) reduce reflections
  • Close windows and doors
  • Turn off noisy appliances

Technical:

  • Connect microphone and camera
  • Close unnecessary applications
  • Silence phone notifications
  • Check available disk space

Equipment Check

  1. Launch Capturly
  2. Select your microphone from the dropdown
  3. Verify audio levels by speaking normally
  4. Select your camera (or “No Camera” for audio-only)
  5. Check the preview for framing and lighting

Audio Level Test

Speak at your normal recording volume:

  • Peaks should reach the yellow zone
  • Most speech should stay in green
  • Avoid hitting red (clipping)

Adjust your position or gain accordingly.

Recording Session

Pre-Recording

  1. Enter your display name - Used in file naming
  2. Set save location - Where files will be stored
  3. Take a breath - Relax before starting
  4. Click Start Recording

Sync beep

After clicking start:

  1. Pre-flight checks run automatically
  2. A half-second 1000 Hz sync beep is mixed into the head of the audio
  3. Leave a beat after it
  4. Begin your content

During Recording

Best practices:

  • Maintain consistent distance from microphone
  • Speak clearly and at a steady pace
  • Monitor the audio level meter
  • Take natural pauses - easier to edit
  • Don’t worry about mistakes - you can edit later

Recording controls:

  • Timer shows elapsed time
  • Stop button ends the recording
  • Audio meter shows real-time levels

Ending Recording

  1. Finish your content
  2. Brief pause - Leave silence for editing
  3. Click Stop Recording
  4. Wait for files to save
  5. Review the session summary

After Recording

Verify Your Files

The Complete Screen shows:

  • Recording duration
  • Files created
  • File locations
  • File sizes

Click the folder icon to open your recordings directory.

File Structure

Your recordings are organized as:

[Save Location]/ └── [Date]/ ├── [SessionID]_[Name]_[Date]_[Time]_audio.wav └── [SessionID]_[Name]_[Date]_[Time]_video.mp4

Quick Quality Check

Before closing Capturly:

  1. Play the audio in your system player
  2. Check the video (if recorded)
  3. Verify the entire recording captured
  4. Note any issues for the next session

Backup Your Files

On a paid plan, a copy of the take was already streaming to your cloud library while you recorded, and you can save it from the Complete screen. That copy expires after 30 days, so it’s insurance against a crash, not an archive.

For anything you want to keep:

  • Copy to an external drive
  • Upload to your own cloud storage
  • Keep originals until editing is complete

Tips for Better Solo Recordings

Audio Quality

Microphone technique:

  • 6-12 inches from the microphone
  • Slightly off-axis to reduce plosives
  • Consistent position throughout
  • Use a pop filter if available

Environment:

  • Record during quiet hours
  • Close HVAC vents if possible
  • Remove ticking clocks or buzzing electronics
  • Consider acoustic treatment for regular recording

Video Quality

Lighting:

  • Face your light source (window or lamp)
  • Avoid backlighting
  • Use soft, even lighting
  • Ring lights work well for webcams

Framing:

  • Eye level camera position
  • Centered with some headroom
  • Clean, uncluttered background
  • Consistent framing each session

Performance Tips

Delivery:

  • Smile - it comes through in your voice
  • Stand up for more energy
  • Gesture naturally (even if not on camera)
  • Vary your pace and tone

Content:

  • Have an outline but don’t read verbatim
  • Embrace natural speech patterns
  • Mistakes are okay - you can edit
  • Energy dips? Take a break and restart

Common Scenarios

Recording Multiple Segments

For content with multiple sections:

  1. Record each segment as a separate session
  2. Or record continuously and split in editing
  3. Use natural pauses between topics

Re-Recording Sections

If you make a mistake:

  1. Don’t stop the recording
  2. Pause briefly
  3. Repeat the section cleanly
  4. Continue - edit out the mistake later

This is faster than stopping and restarting.

Audio-Only Recording

For podcasts without video:

  1. Select “No Camera” in device dropdown
  2. Only audio files will be created
  3. Smaller file sizes
  4. Less storage needed
